National Cannabis Industry Association Rating: Yellow Light

Carly Fiorina does not support legalization, but has admitted that cannabis legalization can create billions of dollars in tax revenue. When asked about California’s legalization initiative, Prop. 19, in 2010, Fiorina responded, “I’m opposed to Prop 19 and the legalization of marijuana. Sending billions of dollars in new tax revenues to Sacramento is exactly the problem… because Sacramento has a spending problem and will continue to spend the money we send them.” However, in May of 2015, she said, “I believe in states’ rights. They’re within their rights to legalize marijuana, and they’re conducting an experiment I hope the rest of the nation is looking closely at.” During CNN’s Republican Debate in September 2015, Fiorina reiterated, “I agree with states’ rights. But we are misleading young people when we tell them that marijuana is just like having a beer. It’s not. And the marijuana that kids are smoking today is not the same as the marijuana that Jeb Bush smoked 40 years ago.”
