Supporters of legalizing medical marijuana in Kentucky touted its potential as a viable alternative to ease the state’s addiction woes from opioid painkillers.

Kings Royal announced just a few months ago that it had selected Kentucky for the location of this plant because of Kentucky’s great potential for growing hemp.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - A Louisville senator on Friday pre-filed the “Cannabis Freedom Act” to legalize and regulate the use of cannabis for people over 21 years old.

A Farm Bill passed by Congress last year included an amendment granting states and universities the right to research hemp. Several states have since started research projects, but Kentucky is at the forefront, experimenting with creating a new industry around this plant. NewsHour's Christopher Booker reports.
