Cannabis Topical Applications

Introduction to Topical Cannabis

Topical cannabis products are applied directly to the skin for localized relief. Unlike inhaled or ingested cannabis, topicals are non-psychoactive because the cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) do not enter the bloodstream. Instead, they interact with cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the skin and muscle tissue.

Types of Topical Products

Topical products are formulated in various ways, each with slightly different applications and absorption characteristics.

Step-by-Step Application Instructions

Follow these steps for the most effective application of cannabis topicals.

  1. Clean the Area: Ensure the area of skin where you plan to apply the topical is clean and dry. This helps maximize absorption.
  2. Dispense Product: Scoop or pump a small amount of the topical onto your fingers. Start with a pea-sized amount, as you can always apply more.
  3. Massage Thoroughly: Gently massage the product directly onto the area of discomfort (e.g., sore muscle, inflamed joint). Use a firm, circular motion until the topical is fully absorbed into the skin.
  4. Wait and Reapply: The effects of a topical can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to be fully noticed. If you do not achieve the desired relief, you can safely reapply another small amount.
  5. Wash Hands: Always wash your hands immediately after application to avoid accidental transfer to eyes or other sensitive areas.

Considerations for Use
Dosage

Topical dosage is highly individualized. It is recommended to start with a product with a lower concentration of cannabinoids and gradually move to higher concentrations if needed. The amount used per application also depends on the size of the area being treated.

Duration of Relief

Localized relief from a single application of a cream or balm typically lasts between 2 to 4 hours. Transdermal patches, however, are designed for sustained release and may provide relief for up to 8–12 hours.
