This summer's best virtual events for stoners

The days, weeks, months and time in general feel like a vague concept in the middle of a pandemic, it’s worth remembering that we’re still in the midst of summer. But the usual beloved summer cultural events we so look forward to all winter — from parades to concerts to food festivals — aren’t happening. Theme parks are shuttered and other tourist attractions are mostly closed.

But don’t fret! Things are still happening, only in the virtual realm. We’ve rounded up some of the best online events happening in the coming months that are worth tuning into — especially when you’re stoned.

Online baking workshop, July 26

Why not get baked and get into baking? This online workshop will teach you how to make donuts, one of the most ideal stoner snacks, after brownies and cookies.

Category Is, Every Friday in July and August

A Zoom drag show full of games and weekly themes, hosted by the self-described “non-binary drag thing” Dank Sinatra.

Virtual Guided Exhibition Tour at the McMichael Gallery, Wednesdays and Fridays until July 31

This gallery is even more accessible now that they’re offering virtual tours online. These experiences will give viewers an intimate and unique looky-loo at works by the Group of Seven. If you have questions — existential or otherwise — you’re in luck, since each tour will end with discussion and the opportunity to ponder away.

Online Intro to Calligraphy Workshop, July 7

With all this time, now’s the time to pick up a new skill. Why not rebel against the technological tides and take up calligraphy?

Fringe Festival Toronto, July 1 – 12

This annual event is switching things up by pre-recording video, audio, written, and interactive content from 50 stage companies from around the world.

Da mic is on, Saturdays until July 24

This online series focuses on the Black experience by way of spoken word, art, comedy and panels. Upcoming series include ARTivism and The Black Experience: Allyship.

Astral Projection Bootcamp, Aug. 3

Reach for the sky without having to leave your couch. This four-week course guides you through the act of astral projection, also known as an out-of-body experience, all through the power of your third eye.

Ghanafest, Aug. 9

This fest celebrating Ghana goes virtual on Facebook and Instagram this year. There will be dance, comedy, music and of course, love. Pull up a seat!

Moon in Cancer, Aug. 15

Look up to the night sky if you’re looking for answers, or tune into this trippy-sounding zodiac event. It vows to get you “travelling without moving into the Mycelium Network with Nanotopia,” the latter of which is a long-time collaboration between two producers that includes soundscapes, field recordings and ephemeral works.

Puppet Time with ZacKey Lime!, July 11

This is technically a children’s event, but don’t let it stop you because it’s bound to be a delight. Pull up a chair and take in a puppet show intended for LGBTQ+ families.

I’m not okay: emo & pop punk dance party, July 10

“It’s okay not to be okay” is a popular mantra these days. So why not try and spin the feeling of not feeling okay by dancing away to emo music? This virtual dance party gives you the power to do just that.

Bang your head: hair metal & glam rock video dance party, July 24

Or, if you’d rather release your bad feelings by banging your head around, there’s a hair metal and glam rock video dance party to ease your woes.

Blockobana 2020, Aug. 2

Join this annual celebration of Black Pride, virtually. Tune in to the party via Zoom, which will feature a fabulous lineup of DJs.

Women in Music Online Benefit Concert 2.0, Aug 2

It’s been a minute since the Lilith Fair days, but this event will fill that void of women in music. Lineup TBD, but the cause is meant to raise awareness and donations for the Unison Benevolent Fund in support of their COVID-19 Relief Program.

Hula Hoop Combo Flow, Every Wednesday until the end of September

Lean into a stoner-at-a-Phish-show persona and get spun right round baby with this fun and silly workout regimen. Not only is this a workout, it’s also an expression so don’t wait around — get your hoop on.
