New Michigan law allows vets to consult about cannabis for pets

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed into law a new bill that will allow veterinarians to consult with pet owners about the use of marijuana and industrial hemp for their animals.

House Bill 5085, sponsored by Rep. Greg Markkanen (R- Hancock), opens the way for veterinarians to ask pet owners about exposure to marijuana in their animals and to consider the use of THC and CBD products.

It passed both chambers of the Michigan Legislature earlier in December. A group of veterinarians spoke to the House Agriculture Committee about the issue in January.
