When United States Marine Corps Sergeant Brett D'Alessandro returned from a deployment to Afghanistan in 2013, something was wrong.

His behavior was erratic and self-destructive. The growing storm in his mind landed him in the hospital after an acute mental-health episode.

Sedated and tied to a gurney, D'Alessandro reflected: "I'm like: 'I was going to college, I was sergeant in the Marines, I was not this. You would call this a crazy person.'"
