Hamden Cannabis Growing Operation, Housing Plan Approved
A new wave of economic development is taking root in Hamden, as local officials approve a plan that combines a cannabis growing operation with a new affordable housing complex. The project, proposed by Massachusetts-based company Soulstar, will transform the former Art Deco Himmel Brothers Co. factory on Dixwell Avenue into a modern site blending innovation, opportunity, and community investment.
The Hamden Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) voted this week to approve a zone change and text amendment for the 5.9-acre property at 1407–1409 Dixwell Avenue. This decision clears the way for Soulstar's vision of creating a cannabis growing operation alongside 20 units of affordable housing. The development represents a unique partnership between private enterprise and local government, designed to boost jobs and expand housing options in Hamden.
Soulstar, known for its Nightjar dispensaries in East Lyme and Bloomfield, N.J., plans to open a hybrid retail space in front of the cannabis growing operation, with the affordable housing units positioned next door. According to Hamden officials, the cannabis growing operation is expected to create at least 50 new jobs once fully operational, offering a welcome economic lift for the community.
