D.C. Shuts Down 70+ Illegal Cannabis Stores

Washington, D.C. regulators are intensifying enforcement against illegal cannabis stores that threaten public health and undermine the legal market. The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA), in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), has closed four cannabis retailers accused of illegal sales and violations posing an imminent danger to the public. This heightened action against illegal cannabis stores follows the Medical Cannabis Conditional License and Unlicensed Establishment Closure Clarification Emergency Amendment Act of 2024, which expanded ABCA's civil enforcement authority.

At Chocolate City Wellness a legally licensed medical business found in violation officials seized 4.8 pounds of cannabis, 10.64 grams of mushroom edibles, 9,158.1 grams of THC concentrate, 16,329.33 grams of THC edibles, 122.5 grams of THC vapes, and $4,748 in cash. These seizures highlight the risks illegal cannabis stores pose to consumers and the community.

At the Citgo Gas Station, enforcement teams recovered 1.7 pounds of cannabis and $2,784.01 in cash, again demonstrating the scale of products moving through illegal cannabis stores.

Last week, enforcement also targeted Shiva Tobacco (2438 18th Street NW) and District Smoke and Cigar Lounge (3236 Prospect Street NW), both unlicensed establishments. Authorities confiscated cannabis, mushroom edibles, THC edibles, THC vapes, and cash from these operations. Officials stressed that illegal cannabis stores not only evade regulation but also endanger public health with untested products.
