For five years, Republican state Rep. Peter McCoy of James Island was a state prosecutor in Charleston, working hundreds of drug cases along the way.

But when the Legislature reconvenes in January, he’ll advocate strongly for one key change in the state’s drug laws that some might think is GOP heresy: legalizing medical marijuana.

His motivation is his 5-year-old daughter. When Mae Loflin McCoy was a few months old, she began having seizures of a sort, something McCoy said was diagnosed as rare “infantile spasms.”
