For Summer Readers Curious About Cannabis, A New Crop Of Marijuana Publications

A mini-boom of pot-related magazines, cookbooks, growers’ manuals and other publications has sprung up  alongside marijuana legalization. Here is a sample for those seeking to grow, bake, sell or learn about cannabis…

Emily Brady reports from her year spent in the secretive pot-growing community of Northern California and illustrates the conflicts there through the lives of four very different residents. Humboldt County is part of the “Emerald Triangle,” considered the country’s premiere marijuana growing region. It’s the heartland of the marijuana industry, and before the failed 2010 legalization vote in California, there were bumper stickers around the county that said: “Save Humboldt County, Keep Pot Illegal.” The majority of growers voted AGAINST legalization because they thought it would affect their bottom line and cause pot prices to crash.

Marijuana Venture Magazine:

Focused on the business aspect of the industry, Marijuana Venture Magazine has grown to a 130+ page glossy publication in just one year and covers banking rules, legal issues, agricultural advice, technology innovations and business profiles. Available in 630+ Barnes and Noble stores and online, “No hippie or stoner stuff,” says publisher Greg James, “No questionable ads for things like the wizzinator (fake pee to pass a drug test) or scantily dressed women in suggestive poses. Just normal folks who are opening licensed businesses in the states that are legalizing it.”

Beyond Buds: Marijuana Extracts—Hash, Vaping, Dabbing, Edibles and Medicines

Looking to explore beyond the joint? Ed Rosenthal’s latest book explains how to make and use the latest concoctions including tinctures, topicals, edibles, shatter, wax, and budder. New processing methods have transformed parts of the cannabis plant that used to be thrown away into robust THC sources. Some extraction processes are straightforward, for example using dry ice. Others, like CO2 extraction require expensive equipment.

Sweet Mary Jane: 75 Delicious Cannabis-Infused High-End Desserts:

Beautiful photos and clear directions to make desserts like Lucie in the Sky chocolate chip cookies, Zo Zo Snaps, and Chocolate Thunder cake, as well as the THC-infused butter, coconut oil and sugar that make them potent. Cooking tip: do NOT sample the batter along the way. Also, it may take 30-120 minutes to feel the effects, so don’t reach for that second brownie right away. Created by Karin Lazarus, owner of Sweet Mary Jane bakery in Boulder, Colorado.

Weed the People: A history of Marijuana in America:

The history of legalization and where the cannabis business industry could be headed, by Bruce Barcott, a contributor to the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and others. Prison populations, safety studies, weight gain, dead heads and MBAs all take their turn under the author’s lens.
