New Mexico is about to become the 24th state to decriminalize marijuana.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham this week signed legislation that will reduce penalties for marijuana from a criminal to civil violation.

A person caught with less than half an ounce of pot will face a $50 fine instead of jail or prison time; penalties for drug paraphernalia will also be reduced.

The law takes effect on July 1, KRQE reported.
