BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- Colombia's government plans to legalize the cultivation and sale of marijuana for medicinal and scientific purposes, officials said Thursday in a surprise shift by the longtime U.S. ally in the war on drugs.

Germany's government has plans to set up a pharmaceutical agency to regulate the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes, according to a media report. Such a step could make the drug more accessible to ill people.

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said Monday he opposes any eventual legalization of marijuana, five days after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of four people who wanted to grow pot for personal use.

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- As Mexico's top court prepares to consider arguments that could open the door to the recreational use of marijuana, some families are hoping such a step could help make medicinal marijuana more accessible.
