Seth Rogen releases funny PSA with a serious message about portion control for weed newbies

Cannabis connoisseur and entrepreneur Seth Rogen has a message for people who are new to cannabis or are making a return after years away: Take a hit and wait 15 minutes to see if another one is needed.

The hilarious video opens with a throw-back message to be considerate of others by rewinding, a sentiment that might be lost on many today.

Rogen is seen welcoming viewers back to Houseplant Presents. He notes the lesson of the day — the apparently hand-held camera clumsily zooms in close on his face — is meant to help people achieve a firmer grasp of the importance of portion control.

The retro-looking offering, complete with scratchy-looking video, then shows several people at a party, looking impossibly unhip and stilted. One woman reaches for a joint as another woman asks in an obviously scripted way: “Are you sure? You don’t ingest cannabis frequently.”

But the first woman appears game. Joint in hand, she responds to those worries with an exaggeratedly playful, no-concerns-here shrug. “Don’t worry about me,” she says as the other guest looks on with growing uneasiness, foreshadowing the hair-raising events that are about to unfold.

The dread comes quickly. One puff and the smoker’s feigned confidence transforms into trepidation and fear as ominous music builds in the background.

Twitching, the woman, excuses herself. “I have to go to the barfroom. I mean bathroom,” she adds with a near-hysterical “Ha, ha. Whoops.”

Barely closing the bathroom door, the other woman knocks. “You okay in there?” she asks. The woman responds she’s fine. The concerned friend then asks, “Did you have too much cannabis?” as the camera zooms in on her face.

The bathroom-trapped woman, growing increasingly panicked and paranoid, responds in a weirdly upbeat and stressed-out voice that she is fine. “Just going to the bathroom like a normal person. Ha ha ha ha.”

Looking in the mirror, the woman tries to calm herself. “Get it together, Selena. Get it together. They’re not looking at you. You’ve had too much cannabis. Get it together. God, you idiot,” she pleads before seemingly starting to cry.

The video then segues to Rogen, sporting a near deer-in-the-headlights look, before growing deadly serious.

“Does this look familiar to you? In many ways, cannabis is unlike anything on earth, full of mystery and wonder,” he says as the video displays a breaking of the dawn, almost God-like image.

That tone then switches to “normal” Rogen. “In other ways, cannabis is exactly like a lot of things on the planet in that not everyone requires the same amount for it to work properly,” he suggests. “If you don’t ingest cannabis regularly or have not ingested cannabis in a while, you may prefer less cannabis than you think,” he says in a welcoming tone, advising people to start slow.

Rogen recommends that newbies and returners take a single hit, as the video shows the formerly freaked-out party guest having a puff and looking happy and relaxed.

“Then get your phone or egg timer and set the alarm for 15 minutes. When your timer goes off, see how you feel,” Rogen recommends. “If you’re not excruciatingly tired or having a panic attack, maybe have another hit. Or don’t. Better to underdo it than to overdo it.”

The video then ends with the tag, “Please ingest responsibly.”

Start low, go slow is a familiar refrain in the world of cannabis. Health Canada advises that with edibles, which can produce unexpected results and take time to kick in, consider looking for products with 2.5 milligrams or less of THC and understand it could take as long as four hours to feel the full effects.

As for smoking and vaping, Health Canada recommends starting with one or two puffs of a joint with 100 mg/g or less of THC, with effects being felt in second to minutes and full effects in up to 30 minutes.

Sundial suggests start low, go slow also applies when trying a potentially more potent strain for the first time.

According to BroBible, it’s tough to get Houseplant cannabis in Los Angeles, where the brand recently launched. The word is that the brand could soon be available at dispensaries in San Diego and the Bay Area.
