Pot advertising may hold great promise for the future. But at present that promise is, if you’ll excuse the pun, mostly smoke.

Legal issues are holding back many media outlets, including local and national TV and newspapers, from accepting ads from dispensaries and other pot-related advertisers.

It’s a tricky issue. With marijuana laws differing from state to state, a pot ad running on, for example, KXLY, a station in Spokane, Wash., where pot is legal, would also be seen in neighboring Cour d’Alene, Idaho, where it is not.
