Jeb Bush Marijuana Policy Project

Marijuana Policy Project on Jeb Bush:

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush announced he is running for president on June 15, 2015.

Where does he stand?

Former Gov. Bush has a long history of supporting the war on drugs and opposing the legalization of marijuana for any purpose. He and his wife, Columba, are on the advisory board of the Drug Free America Foundation, a radical anti-marijuana organization with a history of opposing marijuana policy reform efforts.

In 2014, former Gov. Bush formally opposed a statewide ballot initiative to establish a comprehensive medical marijuana program in Florida.

At the 2015 Conservative Political Action Conference, he said he supports states’ rights to establish their own marijuana policies and that the federal government should not interfere in their decisions.

During a radio interview in December 2015, he said he supports marijuana decriminalization, although he also equated marijuana to opiates, called it a “gateway drug,” and claimed “the new marijuana [is] highly, highly toxic.”

What has he said?

“It’s one thing to say we should have decriminalization of marijuana. I support that. … This is clearly gonna be a state issue, not a federal issue.” WBZ NewsRadio, December 11, 2015

“I thought [legalizing marijuana in Colorado] was a bad idea, but states ought to have that right to do it. I would have voted ‘no’ if I was in Colorado.” C-SPAN, February 27, 2015

“Florida leaders and citizens have worked for years to make the Sunshine State a world-class location to start or run a business, a family-friendly destination for tourism and a desirable place to raise a family or retire. Allowing large-scale, marijuana operations to take root across Florida, under the guise of using it for medicinal purposes, runs counter to all of these efforts. I strongly urge Floridians to vote against Amendment 2 this November.” Reuters, August 14, 2014
