After months of deliberation between Iowa’s Department of Public Health and Department of Transportation, they announced Monday an application to obtain the card online.

Last year the legislature approved a law permitting the possession and use of cannabis oil for patients with intractable epilepsy. This card will be their ticket to legally possess the medically necessary drug. Only patients, over 18, and their primary caregivers can apply for the registration cards.

The application requires a written recommendation from a neurologist. When that is approved, the patient or caregiver will receive an official approval notification and information on how to get the card.

Many parents of children with intractable epilepsy say decriminalizing the oil was a step in the right direction, but it is still nearly impossible to get it to the state legally. Which is why law makers continue discussions in Des Moines on whether they want to go even further with cannabis legislation.
